Family Therapy and Counseling for Parents, Teens and Children

Someone once said that “children don’t come with an owner’s manual”.  Even if they did, it wouldn’t help much, because every child is different and every family is different.  We all share one thing in common, however; we love our children and we want to do what it best for them.

Parents ask for family counseling for a variety of reasons, and most are very pleasantly surprised by how quickly things can change for the better. Most of the time, the most effective way to help children and pre-teens is with parent or family counseling. Our therapists help you, the parent, define what is and isn’t working, and together we introduce new skills and behaviors to help decrease conflict, strengthen relationships, and improve communication.

The teenage years often pose a challenge for both parent and teen. Sometimes teens benefit from individual counseling, and we invite you to review that information here. Many times, even though a teenager may seem to want little or nothing to do with their parents, it is still family counseling that can help the most. Teens are often in a process of pulling away, trying to establish their own identity. In doing so, they may go too far, alienating themselves from the people who love them most.

Parenting teens requires a delicate balance between nurture and structure, warmth and firmness. Sometimes, the combination of our personality and our particular child’s can cause a lot of conflict. Our therapists can help you as a family restore balance and harmony, while still helping you help your teen achieve independence gradually and appropriately.

We see teens and families from Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and surrounding areas.  We have therapists available days, evenings, and Saturdays to help fit counseling into your busy schedule.  For more information, please browse our site by starting out on our home page, or learn more about our therapists here. If you have specific questions, you can email me or call me at 805-583-3976 x 33.  We can talk about who the best therapist might be for your particular situation.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please call our office if you have more questions.
